Throughout the rich and sometimes raucous history of Port Douglas, there have been many men who’ve left their mark on this patch of paradise. But you know what they say?
Behind every man worth his salt is a woman who brings the pepper. Which takes us to the feisty and often feared individual at the centre of this story.
As hard as ironbark and as sharp as the axes that cut it, this forthright female ruled one of the local watering holes at the time. Not with an iron fist though. No, it was with something far more menacing - an old pitchfork. Apparently, the spectacle that was Pitchfork Betty ‘ushering’ a few pickled patrons from her establishment wasn’t a rare sight.
But beneath her diminutive stature, and equally tough exterior, was a big heart with a golden purpose. She was a staunch defender of the good life and the good times in Port Douglas. So when the tide of developers washed in during the 1980’s, needless to say she once again brandished her trusted and slightly rusted pitchfork in an attempt to discourage.
It’s her story of gutsy defiance and passion to preserve the essence of Port Douglas that has inspired our Pale Ale, Pitchfork Betty’s.
Crafted with pure waters from the Mossman Gorge, driven by malt with an all Australian hoppy focus, and balanced with passionfruit and pineapple tones, one sip and you’ll agree that all others pale in comparison.
