4 Mile beach has attracted many an intrepid traveller over the years with its pristine waters, white sand and tropical views. None more cavalier than the loveable larrikin the 'Flying Knight' himself, Charles Kingsford Smith, renowned for his flying exploits around the world and numerous record breaking flights.
The flying ace soared into the hearts of locals in 1932 as he landed on Four Mile beach in his plane the 'Lady Southern Cross' claiming the firmness of the sand to be the best in the world. Adventurous locals eagerly signed up for the thrill of a joyride over their own tropical paradise with this visionary pilot who believed the rise of the great airlines would unite the world.
Thanks in part to funds raised from his visit the 'Flying Knight' could continue his flying exploits around Australia and the world.
Sadly, this international man of adventure disappeared over the Andaman Sea just 3 years later but his memory lives on in the white sands of Four Mile Beach and in the long lasting brew that bears its name.
